Easy Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft for Kids (2 Simple Body Options)

Coffee filter butterflies are a favorite for classrooms and group activities because they combine art, creativity, and simple construction into one successful project. Kids love watching the colors spread, and teachers love how forgiving the process is.

This tutorial includes two easy body options:

  • A clothespin body for maximum stability
  • A pipe cleaner body for flexibility and antennae shaping

Both options are age-appropriate for kindergarten through 5th grade.

Why Coffee Filters Are Ideal for Kids’ Art

Coffee filters are perfect for children because they:

  • Absorb color easily
  • Create instant tie-dye effects
  • Allow creativity without precision
  • Are inexpensive and disposable

Every butterfly turns out different—and that’s exactly the point.

Materials (Per Child)

Required

  • 1 white coffee filter
  • Washable markers
  • Water (spray bottle or small cup)

Choose One Body Option

  • 1 wooden clothespin
    or
  • 1 pipe cleaner

Optional:

  • Googly eyes
  • Paper towels for drying

Step 1: Color the Coffee Filter

Lay the coffee filter flat. Kids color it with washable markers using dots, lines, or shapes. Encourage leaving some white space so the colors have room to spread.

Step 2: Add Water

Lightly spray the filter with water or gently tap it with wet fingers. Watch as the colors spread and blend together.

Set aside to dry for 5–10 minutes.

Step 3: Fold the Butterfly Wings

Once dry:

  1. Lay the filter flat
  2. Fold it in half
  3. Accordion-fold back and forth from the straight edge to the round edge

Pinch the center tightly.

Option A: Clothespin Butterfly Body (Best for K–2)

Clip a wooden clothespin onto the pinched center of the filter. The clothespin becomes the butterfly’s body.

Kids can draw or glue eyes onto the front if desired.

This option is extremely stable and easy for small hands.

Option B: Pipe Cleaner Butterfly Body (Best for Grades 2–5)

Wrap a pipe cleaner tightly around the pinched center and twist once or twice to secure. Leave two ends sticking up and curl them to make antennae.

This option allows more shaping and creativity.

Step 4: Shape the Wings

Gently pull the coffee filter wings outward and fluff them. Kids can spread them wide or keep them slightly folded.

Educational Extensions
